Market Wrap: Nifty ekes out a green close as IT leads, banks lag
A quiet session with a late-hour push. IT did the heavy lifting; private banks dragged. Here is the day in five minutes.
It was one of those days where nothing much happened until the last hour, and then everything happened. The Nifty 50 spent most of the session flat, drifting a few points either side of the line, before a burst of buying in IT names dragged the index into the green by the close.
What moved
IT was the story. After a soft patch, large-cap software names caught a bid on hopes that a US rate cut keeps client budgets intact. TCS and Infosys led from the front. On the other side, private banks quietly leaked through the day, and that kept Bank Nifty in the red even as the headline index closed higher.
Under the surface, the breadth was better than the index suggested. More stocks advanced than declined, which usually means the small pockets of strength were spread out rather than concentrated in a handful of heavyweights.
Why it matters
Days like this are a reminder that the index is a weighted average, not a vote. A single sector can carry the number while most of the market does something else entirely. If you only watched the Nifty close, you would have missed that banks had a rough day.
Nothing here is a recommendation. It is simply what happened, explained in plain English.
