Promoter pledging: a small number worth checking

When founders borrow against their own shares, it is worth a second look. Here is why pledge percentage is a signal.

Buried in every company's shareholding disclosure is a line that many investors skip: how much of the promoter's stake is pledged.

What pledging is

Promoters sometimes borrow money and put up their own shares as collateral. That is pledging. In moderation it is normal. But a high pledge percentage means the lender can sell those shares if the price falls, which can turn a dip into a slide.
