Every listed company publishes who owns its shares, split into four broad buckets. Learning to skim it is one of the highest-return habits for a new investor.
The four buckets
Promoters are the founders and their group. FIIs are foreign funds. DIIs are Indian mutual funds and insurers. Public is everyone else, including retail investors like you.
Watch the trend, not the snapshot
A single quarter tells you little. The interesting signal is the change: are institutions steadily raising their stake, or quietly trimming it? Rising promoter and institutional ownership over several quarters is often read as growing conviction.
